How Elementary School Entry Year Is Calculated in Korea

Elementary school entry year = birth year + 7 (March 1st entry each year)

All children born between January 1st and December 31st of the same year enter the same grade. The early admission system has been effectively abolished so January and February babies enter with their same-year peers.

Difference Between International Age and Korean Civil Age

International age is calculated based on your birthday and is the global standard. Since 2023 Korea's official age system has been unified to international age.

Korean civil age is the current year minus the birth year. Some laws such as the Youth Protection Act still apply this age. For example the legal age for purchasing alcohol and tobacco starts from January 1st of the year you turn 19 in civil age.

No. The early admission system in Korea has been effectively abolished and all children born in the same year enter the same grade. Parents can still apply for early admission but this is very rare.

Since June 2023 international age has been Korea's official standard. However some laws like the Youth Protection Act still use Korean civil age.

Under Korean civil law a person becomes a legal adult on their 19th birthday by international age. From that point legal acts are possible without parental consent. However the legal age for alcohol and tobacco purchases starts January 1st of the year you turn 19 in civil age, which differs slightly.

The 100-day celebration falls on exactly the 100th day from birth, and the first birthday is exactly one year from the birth date. Both are calculated by the solar calendar, not the lunar calendar.

Elementary school entrance ceremonies in Korea are held around March 2nd each year. The school year officially starts on March 1st and the exact ceremony date may vary by school.
